Primary dysmenorrhea is normal painful menstruation which the muscles of the uterus squeeze and contract harder than normal to dislodge the thickened lining (endometrium). These contractions may also reduce blood flow to the uterus that causes pain.
Symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea include pain in the abdomen within the first 24 hours when the period starts.
Secondary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain that is generally related to some kind of gynecologic disorder, such as fibroids, ovarian cyst or tumour, or womb infection.
Symptoms of secondary dysmenorrhea include more painful period after several years, vaginal discharge and heavier bleeding.
