Aromatherapy: Do Essential Oils Really Work?

Beyond a world of aromatic scents, aromatherapy is used to balance, harmonise, and promote the health of the body, mind, and spirit. For more than 1,000 years, aromatherapy has been used to aid in finding relief from common health and wellness problems such as pain, sleep quality, stress, overcoming symptoms of depression, sore joints, and even battling some effects of cancer. In recent years, people have turned to the power of plants for healing purposes and essential oil is one of them!

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are concentrated extracts of various plants that have been used in various ways for generations. Essential oils, which are obtained through mechanical pressing or distillation, are concentrated plant extracts that retain the natural smell and flavour of their source. Extractions are used to obtain a plant’s active botanical constituents that function as its “life force.” They are essentially the liquefied version of a plant, and they effectively allow its beneficial compounds to reach the bloodstream faster than they would by simply consuming the plant. A herbal extract is produced when a botanical material is introduced to a solvent in which some of the plant material components dissolve. Ultimately, the solvent becomes infused with the botanical materials that it has pulled from the source plant, and this is what is referred to as the “extract.”

How do essential oils work?

Essential oils are most commonly used in the practice of aromatherapy, in which they are inhaled through various methods. When inhaled, the scent molecules in essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain and especially impact the amygdala, the emotional centre of the brain. Essential oils enter our bodies either through absorption through the skin, or inhalation via the nose. The skin is the body’s largest organ and anything we apply to our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream. When essential oils are applied to the skin (diluted with a carrier oil), they are absorbed and travel around the body via the bloodstream. In this way, they are able to deliver a range of benefits to the body’s systems and organs. They are able to affect the body through several systems and pathways and create an effect much more quickly. The internal use of essential oils is not safe. Pure essential oils are not meant for ingestion because they are potent and the toxic will damage the internal organs. There are some companies out there who market their essential oils as “safe for consumption”, however, this is not true because essential oils were never meant to be used as dietary supplements.

How to choose the right essential oils?

Picking high-quality essential oils is key to a safe and relaxing aromatherapy experience. Companies with lower-end pricing often use poor-quality oils and dilute them with harmful additives to achieve those cheap price points. When shopping for essential oils, double-check that they don't contain any synthetic fillers. Keep in mind the following to choose essential oils.

Purity: Find an oil that contains only aromatic plant compounds, without additives or synthetic oils. Pure oils usually list the plant’s botanical name (such as Lavandula officinalis) rather than terms like “essential oil of lavender.”

Quality: True essential oils are the ones that have been changed the least by the extraction process. Choose a chemical-free essential oil that has been extracted through distillation or mechanical cold pressing.

Reputation: Purchase a brand with a reputation for producing high-quality products.
