Tea Tree Essential Oil: Nature's Miracle for Health and Wellness

Tea tree essential oil is one of those natural remedies that can handle it all—from clearing up stubborn breakouts to soothing irritated skin, or even freshening up your home without harsh chemicals. Let’s explore how this simple, affordable oil can transform your daily routine and help you tackle life’s little challenges—naturally.

The History of Tea Tree Oil

Here’s a tale of how Tea Tree came about from the Bundjalung people of New South Wales, Australia. They told of a Princess, named Elemani, who had to leave and undertake a long journey on an unknown trail through the bushlands of coastal New South Wales. However, she was fearful that she wouldn’t be able to find her way home to her family and true love, so she spoke to the gods and was rewarded with ‘special’ seeds to sow along the trail.

These seeds grew instantly, seeking the sunlight above, growing in stark contrast to the other trees with a paper, white bark that reflected the moonlight at night in an eerie glow. As the trees continued to guide and protect Princess Elemani, the Bundjalung people eventually came to realize the power of the leaves, using them for traditional medicine including inhaling the oil from crushed leaves to remedy coughs and colds as well as applying the leaves in poultice for wounds and brewing leaves for tea.

By World War II, tea trees had become a popular remedy and Australian soldiers carried tea trees in their first aid kits by 1970, interest in natural products was going viral around the world, and large-scale commercial production for tea tree essential oil began.

Today, tea tree continues to be one of the most popular essential oils.

The Tea Tree Essential Oil: Cool. Healing. Pure.

Tea Tree is a small tree that is native to Australia and is a highly sought-after and popular essential oil, valued greatly for its antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. The oil of the tea tree is extracted from the leaves of the tea tree through steam distillation.

Benefits and Uses of Tea Tree Essential Oils

Tea tree is very versatile and has a wide range of benefits and uses, making it a very useful, all-rounded essential oil. Tea tree has antibacterial properties, helping to kill bacteria and making it useful in treating minor cuts, wounds and skin infections. Tea tree also has antifungal properties, making it effective in treating fungal infections like ringworm and nail fungus. To add to its medicinal properties, tea tree is also antiviral, which assists in combating viral infections.

Tea tree also serves as a natural insect repellent. Applying diluted tea tree oil to insect bites can even reduce the itching and inflammation. But remember it is crucial that you do not apply the tea tree essential oil directly onto the skin as it can cause irritation and swelling and in worse cases, may cause stinging and burning of the skin. Hence, we can dilute the tea tree essential oil in carrier oils like our Jojoba or Rice Bean carrier oils.

Tea tree is also commonly used in skincare due to its anti-inflammatory properties which help in reducing inflammation, soothe irritated or inflamed skin and reduce acne-causing bacteria. It is also part of certain hair-care products that help to reduce dandruff and when the tea tree essential oil is diluted and massaged into the scalp, it can soothe itching and promote an overall healthier scalp.

Tea tree is more well-rounded than you may think! Not only is it used in medicinal and self-care products but it is also used in household cleaning solutions to disinfect surfaces and eliminate germs. Using it in diffusers can help in purifying the air and remove unpleasant odors. Tea tree oil can also help in relieving symptoms of colds, sinus or congestion through inhalation or chest rubs.

Did you know?

While it is more popular to inhale essential oils through methods like nebulisers or diffusers, through inhalation, the effect only lasts 12-24 hours while topical application through creams can last up to 4 days.
