Inflammation is part of the body's immune response that acts as a defence mechanism that recognizes damaged cells and irritants, and begins the healing process. Inflammation is categorised into acute or chronic inflammation.

Types of Inflammation

Acute inflammation is caused by harmful bacteria or tissue injury that arises after a cut or scrape in the skin, a sprained ankle, acute bronchitis, a sore throat, tonsillitis or appendicitis. Some of the signs are Pain, Redness, Immobility, Swelling and Heat (summed up by the acronymPRISH). It is short-term and the effects subside after a few days.

For chronic inflammation, it occurs deep inside of the body with symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain and abdominal pain that is usually long term. Pathogens that the body cannot be broken down and remains in the systems are mainly the cause of chronic inflammation.
